5 Inspiring Life Lessons I’ve Learned from Clients

I’ve met some amazing people over the years, and one of the things I truly love about my interactions with clients is the life lessons they’ve shared with me along the way.

We all have different experiences and as we face the joys and challenges of life, there are certain principles that help to carry us through safely to the other side. In this article, I share some of the ideas and lessons that I value, many of which are still central to my life today.

1.
Stay True to Yourself

It’s easy to get swept up by the crowd and lose your sense of self. You may be affected by what’s going on around you or how others in your circle perceive you. We have a need for acceptance and to please others, and when these values start to overtake our own needs and desires, we start to act differently and lose a big part of who we are. Staying true to ourselves means that we think and act in ways that align with our own core values.

2. Have an Open Mind

One thing that can propel us forward and have a positive effect on our lives is to have an open mind. When we’re faced with challenges, it’s easy to withdraw and feel like the whole world is against us. A perfectly beautiful day suddenly turns bad, and we feel a gray cloud descend over our heads.

One way to change the way we see the world is to understand that things happen “for” us rather than “to” us. When we say that things happen “to” us, we place ourselves in the position of the victim and lose our sense of control. If we take a different stance and view challenges as happening “for” us, it puts the control back in our lives. If something negative happens in my life, I try to find the lesson I can learn from it.

3.
Connect with Others

If you know me personally, you know that I absolutely love to connect with people. I enjoy being around people who are authentic and true to who they are. I treasure my long-term friendships, and I love the opportunity to make new friends— that’s one of the great things about my job!

I think it’s important to be surrounded by a great community of people with whom you can laugh and have fun, but also share deep insights and experiences. Having a strong sense of connection with those around you is so important for your well-being and leads to a more fulfilled life.

4. You Get What You Put In

If you want to achieve anything in life, you have to give it your all. An average effort produces average results, so whether it’s friendships, career pursuits, or hobbies, you have to put 100% effort into it.

As an Edmonton REALTOR® and real estate professional for almost two decades, I’m blessed to have found a career that I love where it’s easy to put 110% effort into everything I do. I’m driven by the desire to find my clients homes that they love, and my reward is seeing the joy in their faces when they’re holding the keys to their new homes.

5. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

There’s a saying—what you focus on expands; with this in mind, it’s important to try to focus on the good stuff in our lives so we can fill our minds with positivity.

I had a friend who used to say, “Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill,” and that’s exactly what it means to not sweat the small stuff. We have enough big challenges in life, so when it comes to the small stuff, just let it bounce right off you. Think of the small stuff as a tiny bouncy ball that hits you but then bounces off in the opposite direction.
